I dont really like using dragons either unless my lord is stacked with hit/defense points I will put him on a dragon and attack a bunch of ground infantry units at once surrounding them with my army setup. I use 4 Phoenix Guards to block the center and from what I noticed using dragons they are good at knocking down infantry not really killing them but slowing down units. When you got a big blob in center being blocked by 4 Phoenix Guards use the dragon to jump in like a mosh pit. Works good just hope theres no spears or blob of spears in there. My lords are maxed out on points and I cant put alot of them on dragons. Dragons are worth using?Thought about using 1 Swordmasters of Hoeth instead of a dragon.Im not into fantasy thats why this sucks for me.

If your lord is a mage type on a dragon maxed out on points you can use a loremaster to replenish magic (match it with recharge)? I didnt know. Who uses magic like that? Ok, this post is. A little confusing, so I'll mostly adress the question in the title.Short answer: yes.

What's great with dragons is that they're an all-purpose unit. If you notice a gap in the enemy line, you can send them hunt down artillery. When there's a melee blob (sometimes caused by another dragon!), their breaths can scores dozens of kills in one go. If you notice one of your flanks is about to be overrun, bam, dragons to the rescue, flank secured. A nasty monster is running toward your lines? Dragon breath + dragon charge, that'll teach him.

Tense close fighting in the center of your lines? Dragon charge in the rear, should be enogh to tip the scales. You have to avoid two things: big concentration of shooters - a star dragon can survive a few volleys, but send him in the middle of six or seven dark elf crossbowmen or skaven slingers, and you'll see his HP melt, and frontal, unsupported charge into anti-large infantry. Oh, and carnosaurs, those are bad for dragon health, m'kay? All in all, they're an extremely reliable choice. Flying means you pick your battles, and they have enough armour and HP to keep being useful in prolonged fighting. Even better if you have an healing mage somewhere. My army which achieved the most devastating results in my campaign against dark elves was my Caledor-themed one. The mix of star dragons and dragon princes was really good - even black guards broke pretty quickly under breath barrage and coordinated charges.

Put dragons on a castle wall during siege and you've got everything under control. Occasionally, make them fly up and breathe down. They are unbetable there because it's so narrow.Just dont make them fly over arrow rains or swoop down as spearmen or fight 1-on-1 against walking beasts of war like carnosaur. Dragon has stopping power with their breathe, speed and charge, but they lack armour for prolonged combat against other giant predators. In fact, Im not evne sure if they can beat a stegadon on rampage. For Vanilla game, use darkshards with shields.

They have a higher chanceof living through the dragon breath. Put around 2 spear units of any tier around those darkshards cause they will do the damage as it comes in, then onces its goated into chaging pull the archers away and kill em with the spears, if it tries to run which it will gun em down with those same archers again. Ive killed 20-30 dragons this way. It got so boring after awhile. Once you start using that tactic then you stop saying oh ♥♥♥♥ dragon and say what a waste of money.Long story short, I wouldnt touch vanilla dragons with a 39 1/2 foot pole. Not worth the investment in my opinion.

I can get the same job done faster with eagles and the breath limit is limiting the only positive thing about vanilla dragons. Originally posted by:I am 110 turns into HE VH and I've had 3 dragons for Tyrion before his invastion of Naggarond, their all dead now 2 moon and 1 star, I find that they were really weak in melee and go destroyed by either arrows or litterly any other monster. I recruited 3 moon dragons for another army to go agains't a lizardmen intervention force, the dragons got destroyedThe only dragons able to sustain prolonged combat are star dragons, and even then, you shouldn't. They're here to provide shock attacks, either by charging the rear of an already engaged unit, or to break enemy formation and open them up for rushing swordmasters or dragon princes. Simply letting them rampage in melee is extremely inefficient - even if they win, it'll take time, HPs, and you do have better things to do with them.Dragons work extremely well when massed with each other, too.

Constant terror charge, with breath attacks from the ones still in the air to clear the space around those on the ground, allowing them to fly up again, and you can destroy parts of the enemy army without giving them any chance to regroup. Swoop in, kill things, fly back up, rinse and repeat. Shock cavalry to provide a second punch if you feel like it. Im not an overly balancing guy. If a Dark Elves army is packing 3 void dragons and all you got is basic spearmen and no archers, run. They will tear through rank upon rank in a ramage of pure joy. Ive personally lost many battle cause I wasnt equiped to handle the beasts.

They are much more rarely used but when they get used its duck and cover. Imo thats how to should be, they inspire awe and fear not just in your troops but in you.Sure one or two may die but tbh basic tier units vs dragons? Nope not having that.
